SPECIAL MATHS PUZZLE (APRIL 2011)

Easy: U   Look  4  Exercise Result

2007 marked the three hundredth anniversary of great mathematician Leonhard Euler’s birth. The sum of the digits of the year in which he died is 19 and the last two digits make a prime number. We know that he lived more than 40 years so, CAN YOU FIGURE OUT WHICH YEAR HE ACTUALLY DIED? Reason your answer, please.

SOLUTION
2007 - 300 = 1707
1707 + 40 = 1747
If the sum of the digits is 19 and we already have 17xx, we need 11 in the last two digits. The only possibility, being the last two digits a prime number, is thus 1783.
