E.U. Competition # 2 (First Leg of Second Year) Hi everybody!! Thanks for your answers. We are keeping a list of all the students who answered the questions alright and we will also send a reader to the fastest student who submitted them!!! Here we are again with three more questions about Europe for you to find out before the 15th of November. Send your answers please to iescampanar10@gmail.com
1.-You have probably heard the tragic news about the Merapi volcano erupting in Indonesia. Now, do you remember the name of another volcano, in Europe, whose ashes caused air-traffic havoc last April? Where is it?
2.-Which countries in Europe have the word ‘land’ in their names in English? (Example: Switzerland)
3.-And now, because the first two questions were both easy and short a bit of TRIVIA:
a) Who painted ‘The Water Lily Pond’ in 1899?
b) When DST ends, all clocks will retreat from 03.00 to 02.00 . But, what does DST stand for and for how long have we been putting it into practice in Europe?
c) Which drink did Bach enjoy so much that he wrote a cantata for it?
d) I am sure it is played in your country too. Which is the odd one out: queen, king, pawn, bishop, cardinal, castle?
e)What links Sartre, Nietzsche, Descartes and Russell?
Well, the solution and new questions in a fortnight’s time! And Happy Halloween!! "!…☻☺ "!…☻☺"!…☻☺
SOLUTION
1)Eyjafjallajökull In Iceland
2) Ireland, Finland, Iceland, Poland, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Scotland, England (and Greenland).
3)
a)Claude Monet
b)DST stands for Daylight Saving Time. We have been using it since 1966 in most European countries clocks
(or just the opposite) respectively in the last weekends of March and October.
c) coffee
d)cardinal (all the others can be found on a chess board)
e) They are philosophers.

MATHS PUZZLE #4 -First Leg, Second Year-
(from the 25th October to the 2nd November)
ELECTIONS
In a particular country´s latest elections, in which there were 3,456,000 votes and 4 candidates, the winner defeated the other three opponents by 134,890, 64,500 and 15,490 votes respectively.
However, none of them managed to know the exact number of votes that each one received.
How could we get this information?
You can send the solution to FernandoEscuin@iescampanar.com
SOLUTION
The numbers of votes are: x, y, z and t. Where x is the votes of the winner.
We have:
x + y +z + t = 3.456.000
x= 134. 890 + y
x = 64500 + z
x = 15.490 + t
Summing the last three equalities:
3x = 214.880 + y + z + t
Now, summing x to the two sides:
4x = 214.880 + x + y + z + t
4x = 214.880 + 3.456.000
4x = 3.670. 880
x= 3.670.880/4
x= 917.720 votes
y = 782.830 votes
z = 853.220 votes
t = 902.230 votes
You can send the solution to FernandoEscuin@iescampanar.com

MATHS PUZZLE # 3 FIRST LEG
MATHS PUZZLE # 3 FIRST LEG --Second Year of Project--
(from the 18th to the 25th of October)
In how many ways can you write 111 as a sum of three whole numbers (integers) which are in geometric progression?
Remember that geometric progression is a series of numbers in which each number is multiplied by a fixed amount (called ratio) in order to get the next number: for example: 1, 5, 25, 125.
You can send the solution to FernandoEscuin@iescampanar.com
SOLUTION
The sum is like this:
a + ar +ar2 = a(1 + r + r2) = 111

You can send the solution to FernandoEscuin@iescampanar.com
SOLUTION
The sum is like this:
a + ar +ar2 = a(1 + r + r2) = 111
The factorial decomposition of 111 is:
111 = 1x3x37
We have the following possibilities:
a = 1
1 + r + r2 = 111
r2 + r – 110 = 0. The values of r are: 10, -11
With solutions: 1, 10, 100 and 1, -11, 121
a = 3
1 + r + r2 = 37
r2 + r – 36 = 0, this equation doesn’t have integer solution.
a = 37
1 + r + r2 = 33
r2 + r – 2 = 0, with roots r=-2, 1
Now, we have new solutions: 37, -74, 148 and 37, 37, 37

Hi everybody!! Here we are again with three easy questions about the EU and Europe for you to answer before the 30th of October. Send your answers to iescampanar10@gmail.com
1.-You probably know by now that there are five schools from five different countries working together in our Comenius Project. Can you tell me the name of those 5 countries NOT in English but each of them in its own language?
2. Because it plays an important role in sectors as varied and diverse as education, youth, culture, sport, environment, health, social care, consumer protection, humanitarian aid, development policy, research, equal opportunities and external relations, 2011 is going to be designated ETH UONEPEAR AYER FO LUNGTOERIVEN. Oooops! Can you unscramble that?
3.-Fill in the blanks in the sentences below and also say which awards we are speaking about.
The 1984 for Literature went to …………..
The 2007 for Chemistry went to Germany.
The …… for Medicine went to Spain.
The 1994 for Chemistry went to .............

A ROAD HOG
A reckless driver was driving his vehicle and speaking on his mobile phone at the same time. That’s why he caused an accident. The guy fled but the three passengers travelling in the car he had the crash in managed to see part of the reckless driver’s car number plate.
Eduard, the one who was driving, remembered that the first two digits of the guy’s number plate were the same number. Sergi, who was sitting next to the driver, remembered that the last two digits were also the same number. Behind them in the car was Carla, a young girl who was mad keen on Mathematics. She said that the guy’s number plate had four digits and that it was a perfect square.

You can send the answers to FernandoEscuin@iescampanar.com
SOLUTION
A possible solution is:
The numbers which once squared are a 4-digit figure can only be those between 32 and 99.
On the other hand just because of the divisibility rules, these squared numbers are multiple of 11 since the odd digits sum as much as the even ones. Possible numbers are:
33² = 1089
44² = 1936
55² = 3025
66² = 4356
77² = 5929
88² = 7744
99² = 9801
The only solution then is 7744 (The first two digits are the same and also the last two)

MATHS PUZZLE # 1 (Second Year of Project)
A man says:
‘My father was born in 1930 and he is a year older than my mother. On their wedding day they both were older than 20 and they got married a year of which the sum of its digits is 18.
As for me, I was born some years later and the sum of the digits of that year also equals 18.
And guess what? Another coincidence: the sum of the digits of the year in which I turned 18 is also 18.
Can you tell me how old I will be in 2018?'
-----------------------------------------
You can send the answers to FernandoEscuin@iescampanar.com
SOLUTION
Since his father was born in 1930, his mother in 1931 and both of them were older than 20, the year they got married must be a year after 1951.
Now the possible years of which the sum of the digits equals 18 can be 1953, 1962, 1971 and 1980.
When this man turned 18, the digits of that year also summed 18 so the only possible answer is 1962 because 1962+18=1980 (a year of which the sum of the digits also makes 18). Thus, his parents got married in 1953, he was born in 1962,he turned 18 in the year 1980 and, finally, in the year 2018 he will be 56.(2018-1980=38, so 38+18=56)

THE COMENIUS FAMILY VISITS SWITZERLAND, THE CROSSROADS OF EUROPE
Seventeen students and seven teachers from Ajka, Lüneburg, Lipník and Valencia have just come back from the beautiful city of Geneva after spending some unforgettable days at their partner school Collège Sismondi. The synergies between the school, families and the Geneva canton's institutions have made this mobility possible, something for which all the other schools are most grateful. With its four official languages, Switzerland has always shown cultural diversity and encouraged multicultural integration and education, being but the perfect place to meet for "the School as the Integration Engine" Comenius project. Merci bien and congratulations for the visit superb organization.

26th of September: DAY OF LANGUAGES 2010
Since the five countries that take part in the present Comenius project all use different languages (French, English, Hungarian, Czech, German and Spanish), we feel it is a great idea to celebrate with our students The European Day of Languages 2010, today September the 26th, and thus, we invite all the people visiting our blog, to join this European Council initiative which includes varied national and international events, games, posters to download and the possibility to learn very interesting facts about languages. Did you know, for example, that no language is in itself more difficult than any other? -all children learn their mother tongue in the same natural way and with equal ease.
"The main aims of the European Day of Languages are to raise awareness of the rich diversity of Europe and to encourage people to learn more languages"

Our Comenius project turning 1 year old?! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!
As soon as we knew that our Comenius project had been accepted last year, we decided to create a blog for it. In fact our project blog “The School as the Integration Engine” has been working since the 23rd of July 2009 and it has proved to be a mirror of what we have done, are doing and are going to do for students,teachers and the whole school community, city and beyond. In addition, our blog has also proved to be the best and most flexible way of communication among the five countries that take part in our
project, i.e. Gymnázium, Lipník nad Bečvou LIPNÍK NAD BEČVOU (The Czech Republic); Bródy Imre Gimnázium, Szakközépiskola. AJKA (Hungary), Gymnasium Ödeme, Lüneburg, (Germany), Collège Sismondi, GENEVA (Switzerland), IES Campanar. VALENCIA (Spain).
We have worked hard but are happy with the results; the feedback we have got from our project seems to push the engine rolling farther and farther than we had expected. Thanks to everybody!!!!!
Dêkuji!, Köszönöm!, Danke! Merci bien!, ¡Gracias!, Gràcies!

STUDENT'S SUMMERTIME BLUES
Well, I woke up this morning, with no school to go ☺
Yeah, not a word of warning, no Einstein, Listz, Van Gogh! ♫
But worse no more Comenius, ☼
What I gonna do, I did feel like a genius ♫
A bit heterogeneous but just like a John Doe! ☻
Most of our classrooms will be empty soon when the Summer holidays begin in the different countries of our project. And what a student said recently about her experience in Lipník ("Despite our national differences, we're pretty much the same") is true for all of us, teachers and students.
This blog will be open to you, though, to offer you some information on our project, which was born last July the 23rd. From that date, we have had EU and Puzzle Competitions, a Literary Contest, amazing mobilities to Ajka and to Lipník nad Bečvou, a videoconference, a Europost Day and many other activities but what we will all probably remember best is the feeling that we have real friends in another country, and that we have lots of things in common with them. Keep in touch!
And this is the homework for this Summer. There will be a prize In September for the best Scrap Book (sort of album with photos, realia, diary entries, tickets...) on the trips to Ajka and to Lipník. And if you are not one of the students who travelled to either of these two destinations, there will also be a prize for the most creative Digital Scrap Book. Show off how good you are using your PC!

Well, it's over, we know. However, we will not easily forget such a pleasant stay and positive experiences we all had in Lipník nad Bečvou. Behind us we have left four days of non-stop activities, all of them very interesting and we would like to thank the Gymnázium Lipník nad Bečvou for their great effort in the preparation of this mobility, which has been so successful. The students did not want to leave Lipník but all of us will continue in touch in this project we share. Five countries, five languages, one soul. Even the sun celebrated it shining brightly on our last day. Nashledanou!
You can find ABOVE the powerpoint presentations the students took to Lipník.

WORLD BOOK DAY IN VALENCIA
At Valencia IES Campanar school, the celebrations of the World Book Day took place with different activities both on the 23rd and on the 30th . Last Friday, the Comenius Literary Contest Awards prepared for the 10 winning students as well as those for the Maths Puzzle Competition and EU Competition were presented during a concert which included poems recited and music played by our students.
In the photo above you can see (on the right) Pilar García, IES Campanar Head Teacher Deputy, who has just given Fernando Escuin, the Comenius Project Coordinator, the certificates previously mentioned so that they can travel to Lipník, and one of the IES Campanar students, Joan Josep Pla, receiving his Maths Puzzle Award, the book and the red rose.
During the whole of last week, all the literary contest entries from the different countries had a place in the exhibition held in the hall of the school to celebrate World Book Day.
"Per Sant Jordi, una rosa vermella i un llibre escrit entre tots" (On St George's Day -23rd April, a red rose and a book written by and among us all). Thank you everybody!
The Spanish party travelling to the Czech Republic also decided to send all the Comenius family a photo (below) looking forward to seeing them all.

WORLD BOOK DAY IN LÜNEBURG
World Book Day -on the 23rd of April- was originally a Catalan tradition on the day of Sant Jordi (Saint George), people buying roses and also books from stalls and bookshops in most places in Spain now. In addition, it was a 23 of April when Miguel de Cervantes, William Shakespeare and Garcilaso de la Vega, three of the most important writers in the world, died. That is why the UNESCO named this date "World Book Day"" with the enthusiastic approval of many other countries where it is also celebrated. Germany is an example.
What day could, therefore, be more suitable for the winners of the Literary Contest to be given their awards and prizes and, of course, a rose?
In the photo you see the two German winners of the Literary Competition Marie Bryzgalski (middle) and Danie Klein (right)together with the winner of the Mathematics Competition Luisa Wiechert (left). The aim of the Literary Contest was the creative handling of the question whether they see the EU countries as "brothers in arms, solidarity partners or war heroes" with regard to conflicts around the world, a key issue at the moment, given the problems in Afghanistan. The students have written texts (essays, poems, short stories, etc...) of between 150 and 300 words in English.
The 10 best entries participating in the project schools (two per country) were selected by the Comenius Project team in Spain and can be seen on the project blog www.schoolintegrationengine.blogspot.com/
(written on the Oedeme Gymnasium official website by our Comenius project Coordinator in Lüneburg Ms Antje Frels ).

COMENIUS PROJECT “Hero of War” LITERARY CONTEST
The high quality of all the finalists’ writings, which were submitted by the 5 schools, has made it really difficult to reach an agreement on which one is actually the best.
The topic “Hero of War” has been presented as a poem, letter, tale, short story, diary entry and essay. Interpretations have also been different, fighting soldiers, ghosts from the past, cancer, pollution, sexism or getting aware of our ancestors’ suffering, of personal experiences and of disabilities.
IES Campanar celebrates, as every year, UNESCO World Book Day on the 23rd of April with different activities and the names of the winners below will be read and a certificate will be issued with their respective awards. On the other hand, most of the writings by these or the other finalists are already being exhibited in the hall of the school for the students, teachers and parents to read and enjoy.
Thank you to everybody for your effort and collaboration.

E.U. Competition # 5 (Final one of the Second Leg)
Hi, everybody! Three questions and a game this time.
Number 1: You want to create your own Europass CV. The EU helps you on which website?
Number 2: The EU also offers you a tool which can help you recognise which EU language a text has been written in? Again, where can you find this information?
Number 3: Short answers now like in trivia quizzes:
a)Which country has not fought in a war since 1815?
b)Name 4 island nations which are members of the EU.
c)Which capital city's name is Gaelic for Black Pool?
d)Bonn lies on the banks of which river?
e)In the Spanish city of Salamaca students try to spot a frog on the university building facade. Why?
f)What nationality was the composer Liszt?
h)In which European capital city can you find the most famous astronomical clock?
Now the game: Follow the instructions mentally. Don't cheat. Let's see how good you are.
-Think of a number from 2 to 10
-Multiply it by 9
-Add the two numbers of your total together (for example, if the answer is 23, then 2+3)
-Take away 5
-If your answer is 1, it equals A, if it is 2, it equals B, 3 equals C , 4 equals D, etc....
-Think of a country in Europe beginning with that letter.
-Think of an animal, not a bird or a fish that begins with the second letter of that country.
-Think of the colour of your animal.
Well, it's always fun to think of grey elephants in Denmark, isn't it?
Hope you liked it.
Solutions:
Question 1: http://europass.cedefop.europa.eu/europass/home/vernav/Europass+Documents/Europass+CV.csp
Question 2: http:// langtech.jrc.it/#Analysis
Question 3: a)Switzerland; b)Malta, Ireland, Great Britain, Cyprus; c) Dublin; d) Rhine; e)If you see one you will pass all your exams at University, according to the legend; f)thought to be Hungarian; g) Prague.
EU COMPETITION WINNER: Strang Zsanett from Ajka's Bródy Imre Gimnázium. Congratulations!
(We thank Macmillan Publishers office in Valencia for their support with the prizes).

PUZZLE#5 SECOND LEG (from 11th of March to the 25th of March 2010)
With this Puzzle ends the Second Leg.
The following figure, enclosed by three semicircles tangent among them on their extremes is called "arbelos", which means “shoemaker's knife” in Greek, and this term is used because the shaded area in the figure below resembles the blade of a knife used by ancient cobblers. Archimedes himself is believed to have been the first mathematician to study the mathematical properties of this figure. Show that its area is the same as the area of the circle which has as diameter segment BD, perpendicular to diameter CA.

The correct solution from LUISA WIECHERT is:
Simplify up to the maximum:
121212...121212
212121...212121
Solution: If you reduce this fraction by 3, you get 4040…0404/7070…0707 (2009 digits).
Then you can reduce it by 1010…0101 (2009 digits)
Then you can reduce it by 1010…0101 (2009 digits)
and you get 4/7.
So the solution is 4/7.
